Infrastructure is built where capital, regulation and a customer meet in the same timeline.
Energy infrastructure projects rarely fail on one dimension. They fail because the grid schedule, the permitting schedule, the financing schedule and the customer's decision cycle were never aligned.
The industry challenge
- Hybrid systems combining generation, storage, hydrogen and digital infrastructure are technically attractive and commercially complex.
- Every stakeholder optimises their own risk position.
- Public funding shapes the structure but arrives on political, not commercial, timelines.
- Projects are developed in isolation from the industrial customers who could anchor them.
My perspective
I treat project development as a commercial exercise with an engineering component, not the reverse.
The valuable work is the sequencing: what must be locked first so the rest becomes financeable.
Industrial partners are the cheapest source of credibility a project can get. They are also the slowest. Both must be planned for.
The moment a project can explain its risk allocation in one page, capital becomes available.
What companies frequently underestimate
- How much local political and community work sits behind a permit.
- That grid capacity is the scarcest input in the whole value chain.
- The difference between a letter of intent and a contract a bank will accept.
- That good projects die from slow decisions, not from bad engineering.
